Love Lessons

Today is Show Us Your life Friday at Kelly's Korner and the topic is marriage advice! So I thought I would re-post this post I did in February about Love Lessons ;) Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite paintings by J.W.Waterhouse! It is Psyche and I believe her fairytale has a lot of hidden gems for women when it comes to relationships. Since February is the month of love, I thought I would start off the months by giving a few of my love tips...some of which have been true since the dawn of time:)

1. Keep your love private.
I don't mean to say that you should not tell anyone about your special someone...I mean keep your love private.  When your husband does something special for you don't brag about it.  The special things that made you fall in love with each other...keep them special.  Essentially, the woman who talks too much about her significant other invites others to take interest as well. (Debby told Suzy about how great Bert is and now Suzy likes him too)

2. Keep yourself cute and smelling pretty....at home too!

Excerpt from Etiquette 1922 by Emily Post

How many times has one heard some one say: “I won’t dress for dinner—no one is coming in.” Or, “That old dress will do!” Old clothes! No manners! And what is the result? One wife more wonders why her husband neglects her! Curious how the habit of careless manners and the habit of old clothes go together. If you doubt it, put the question to yourself: “Who could possibly have the manners of a queen in a gray flannel wrapper? And how many women really lovely and good—especially good—commit esthetic suicide by letting themselves slide down to where they “feel natural” in an old gray flannel wrapper, not only actually but mentally. The woman of charm in “company” is the woman of fastidiousness at home; she who dresses for her children and “prinks” for her husband’s home-coming, is sure to greet them with greater charm than she who thinks whatever she happens to have on is “good enough.” Any old thing good enough for those she loves most! Think of it!

I read this when I was younger and I always try to make myself pretty at home for my husband.  This does not mean I am not comfortable at home...just that I try to take care with my appearance....clean hair brushed hair, cute lounge clothes...etc:)

3. Be girly, men love feminine women. (p.s. this does not mean weak..you can be feminine and still be strong)

4. Learn to cook and learn to cook well. (But make him cook for you sometimes as well)
Check out the Pioneer Woman for ideas

Beef Fajita Nachos...can we say yummmm!

5. If you need advice on your relationship get it from God, the bible is an excellent source on every matter under the sun in my opinion.  Need romance?  Song of Solomon.  Need advice how to be a good wife? Proverbs 31:10-31. Had a fight? Proverbs, 15:1, 2 Timothy 2:24, Titus 3:1-2, Proverbs 29:11

6. Stand up for yourself and your wants from the beginning.
Men respect a women who dictates how she will and will not be treated.  Doing this in a loving but firm manner from the start of your relationship will establish boundaries that will help guide your relationship in the future.  (p.s. Be picky with men...a bad boyfriend will make for a worse husband! remember that you are beautiful and deserve to treated like a princess:)

Mary Poppins handles Burt quite well:)

7. Learn from Psyche... do not surround yourself with women with bitter hearts much less listen to their counsel!

8. Have Fun! Don't let the responsibilities that came with age and motherhood keep you from having the fun you had when you first fell in love.

I am sure that Tiana and Naveen spent many years having fun in the Bayou with Mama Odile

9. Let your husband or boyfriend be the man...let him do little things for you even if you could probably do them yourself...It makes him feel good about himself.

10. PUT GOD FIRST! :)

Those were just my rules and of course what do I know really:) others have different love rules completely.  What are your love rules?

  1. Put your marriage first! Our society teaches women to put their children first, but that isn't the way that God designed it. You don't choose your parents, siblings, or children (except by adoption), but you do choose your spouse. Make it a wise choice, and then stand by the vows that you've made to him/her. You didn't just make those vows to your spouse, but you also made a promise to the Lord. When times are tough, draw closer together. Find a way to stay in agreement, even if that means agreeing to disagree. Most of all, never forget that your spouse isn't just your lover -- they're also supposed to be your best friend. Lust doesn't last, so make sure you marry someone that you can see yourself still loving once the 'loving' cools. And (like Nichelle said), keep God in the middle of everything. Use your marriage as a way to serve the Lord!!!

  8. Great post! Being feminine is so important. Men really do like that...not a bossy, controlling woman like I use to be. ;). Keep up the good work!
